Available Field Coverage

The wizard tries to match your field of view and working distance requirements. If it can't match them exactly, (which is more than likely), it presents the options nearest your requirements. The format of the optical parameters will vary with the lens family as some will not be applicable.

The term "working" relates to the nominal values existing at the Wizard's recommended set-up conditions. A zoom system can also have a range of max and min values depending on further excursions of the zoom optics.

Refer to Formulas and Definitions for additional explanations.

The results list may include the following:

  • Working Distance
  • Working Field Coverage (field of view, FOV) -- Total range where applicable
  • Working System Magnification -- Total range where applicable
Where requested "more info", further results may include the following

  • Depth of Field (DOF) -- Total range where applicable
  • Working Lens Resolve Limit -- Total range where applicable -- the smallest detail capable of being collected by the lens system (1/2 the threshold lp/mm). This value, times the system magnification, must cover 2 pixels on the sensor to be "seen".
  • Working Camera Resolve Limit -- Total range where applicable -- the size of the smallest detail which will be imaged at sufficient magnification to cover two pixels on the sensor.
Note: the Camera Resolve data will only be presented if pixel size is entered.

Referring to the above results (solutions #1, and #2):

The equipment is a Zoom 6000, with 2 sets of accessories. The first is a 3.5X Adapter and no Lens Attachment, the second is a 3.5X adapter with a 1.5X Lens Attachment.

The working distances are 92mm and 51mm.

Field coverage (FOV) is 1mm, in each case. The total ranges are included because it is a zoom system.

The required magnification is 6.6X and both systems are working at 6.6X. Note that #2 has the ability to produce a higher magnification (zoomed up), while #1 is able to cover a larger field (zoomed down).

DOF is shorter for solution #2 because it has a higher NA.

Lens resolution is also finer for solution #2, again because of the higher NA.

Working Camera resolve (with .010mm pixels) was the same in each case because the magnification is the same, but the extreme case (zoomed up) shows a finer detail for #2 because of the higher mag.

At the working position, the lenses can pick up a 0.0034, and 0.0029 detail. The camera will "see" what the lens gives it in each working condition case, but at maximum zoom, the camera could see much more than the lens can present. This makes the system "lens limited".
